Tahlequah

Tahlequah is nestled in the Cookson Hills between the Illinois River and Lake Tenkiller. There are many stories about the naming of Tahlequah, but many believe the name came from a meeting arranged to select a site for the town. Only two delegates arrived at the meeting, and according to legend, the delegates said Tah-le-ya-quah, meaning two is enough to decide.

Today, Tahlequah has a charming small town feel with big city amenities. Tahlequah offers abundant opportunities for year-round entertainment, shopping, outdoor and sporting activities, ancient and present day culture and some of the friendliest people you’ll ever meet.

Designed as the capital of the Cherokee Nation, Tahlequah is often referred to as one of the most historically significant cities west of the Mississippi. While you’re in Tahlequah, be sure and visit the Cherokee Heritage Center where visitors can receive a more comprehensive view of Cherokee history and culture at its best. The center’s numerous attractions and events give guest an inside look at the Cherokee way of life both past and present and offer an educational opportunity the entire family will enjoy.
